This may seem like a topic that's specific to conformance-testing, and indeed that will be our focus, but in fact the identification of test assertions is important for all kinds of testing.
On behalf of Sun I am co-sponsoring (with Jacques Durand of Fujitsu) an OASIS discussion group and (soon, we expect) a Technical Committee to promote the use of test assertions within the standards-development community.
Our goal is to encourage the developers of specifications to define and markup test assertions that test developers can then use in their work. I'm supporting this effort because if we can get some international standards in place then it will obviously be easier to persuade our own developers to provide us with high-quality specifications in which (or from which) test assertions have been identified.
